Darwin’s account of the voyage. These volumes were published in 1839. During the voyage, Darwin and FitzRoy had more or less shared their opinions of Lyellian uniformitarianism, but also of an opposition to the concept of transmutation (the alteration of one species into another) of the species. Following the voyage, both men’s ideas changed. Darwin produced a second version of his diary notes in 1845 in which he added his ideas about transmutation.
